Biedermeier Dining Table
Oval Biedermeier Dining Table: I veneered this pedestal based table with a combination of maple and and mappa burl. To decrease weight I glued baltic birch plywood to the very light corrugated cardboard core. I then added a curved laminated maple band around the periphery. The maple veneer with mappa burl insets cover these core boxes. I halved the top for mobility. The base is a sandwich of solid baltic birch plywood with laminated maple edging. I turned the poplar legs on a lathe and painted them black. Finally I sprayed the whole table with DuraVar catalyzed laquer. I have used this construction technique to build other large tables as well. See: Conference Table
The customer had seen and saved a New Yorker ad I ran. She called asking if I had ever made anything in the Biedermeier style and would I be interested in making a large dining table. I told her I had not worked in that particular style but would be happy to give it a try or to recommend someone else. Over the next year we corresponded. She sent pictures of a Biedermeier Sideboard she had bought and also sent me a book with pictures of Beidermeier furniture. I responded with various drawings and revisions of drawings and she finally chose the Oval Biedermeier Dining Table you see pictured here.
Overall Dimensions: 9' 6" long x 5' wide x 30"
Oval Extension Table
Ming Shaker Oval Extension Table: A simple Hepplewhite inspired oval extension table pictured here in cherry. I make two versions of these tables. The recessed skirt version is pictured here with one leaf inserted. Overall dimensions are: 72″L x 42″W x 30″H closed with two 22″ leaves. This is the 42″ wide version, the other standard available being 48″ wide. This table has a recessed skirt to accommodate “pushed in” arm chairs. See the photo of the Ming Shaker Round Table for an alternative skirt arrangement equally striking, but less conducive to arm chair storage.
Overall Dimensions: 72″L x 42″W x 30″H closed with two 22″ leaves
Gazelle Leg Table
Gazelle Leg Table: the first of two contemporary cabriole leg dining tables that I designed with this leg. My design was inspired by traditional Queen Anne Cabriole Legs and I have always liked the graceful curve of the style. This table has 4 legs and comes with one 22" leaf. It is pictured here in cherry with a natural finish. I built the first of these on speculation very early in my career during a lull in orders.
The second gazelle leg table designed was an 8 legged oval extension table. I also made a set of end tables with gazelle legs; they are a personal favorite; click and see an amateur photo: Gazelle Leg End Tables
Overall Dimensions: 60"L x 42"W x 30"H with a 22" leaf.
Pencil Leg Dining Table
Pencil Leg Dining Table: Pictured with one of its two 22" leaves inserted, this 72" x 48" cherry extension table opens to 116" when fully extended. This very stable eight leg design can support additional leaves. The tapered octagonal (pencil) legs were inspired by the tapered octagonal posts on pencil post beds; see the link below. When the second Eldredge brother and his wife asked me to make them a dining table the same size as the one I designed and built for his brother, but different, this is the design that won. I have made numerous sizes of the pencil leg dining table and desks in this style as well. Depending on the wood, finish and moldings this style fits nicely in both traditional and contemporary settings. Overall Dimensions: 72"L x 48"W x 30"H with two 22" leaves
Round Table
Ming Shaker Round Table: The photo shows a 48″diameter cherry round table with two of the Contemporary Windsor Variation Side Chairs. I have made this table in larger and smaller diameters. The table pictured is solid, but could made as a round extension table. I also make an oval and oval extension version.
Overall Dimensions: 48" diameter x 30"H
Contemporary Cabriole Leg Table Extension Table
Contemporary Cabriole Leg Table: I present another example of a table with gazelle legs. This extension table is similar in overall dimensions to Arabella's Banquet Table (aka: Pencil-leg Dining Table). The owners of the two different tables are brothers. I bent laminated the tiger maple skirts, added a solid tiger maple top along with plain maple legs, and two leaves to make this oval extension table seat 6-10 comfortably.
Overall Dimensions: 72"L x 48"W x 30"H. With its two 22" leaves inserted it expands to 116" long
