Windsor Bench

Windsor Bench: This contemporary Windsor bowback bench or settee was one of my first designs.  Made to compliment my Contemporary Windsor Side Chair,  inspiration for the bench originated in my love of Shaker furniture and the techniques I learned during the five plus years I worked at Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers.   Pictured you see a cherry bench with ash spindles and maple (often birdseye or tiger maple) legs.  I have also made this bench in maple, walnut, and oak.  All but the oak bench had ash spindles.  I laminate the curved "bow" of the back  because cherry and many other woods do not steam bend well enough to make the tight curves you see.  For the cherry benches I buy laminating veneer in flitches.  A flitch is a half a log that has been sliced with a knife, in this case to 1/10th inch thick slices.  Since the slices come in sequence the grain matches when the bows are glued together and the glue lines seem to disappear.  I rough shape the seats with an electric chainsaw then grind and finally sand 4 time in successively finer grits.  Call for pricing on longer (or shorter) benches.
Standard Dimensions: They are available with four legs in two sizes: 48'″L x 36 1/2″H x 21″D and 60″L x 36 1/2″H x 21″D I can make longer sizes with six legs: call for pricing

Transition Dutch Chairs

Transition Dutch Chair with Spanish Feet: The chair is pictured in  honey/amber dyed maple with a carved Pillow Top and Spanish Feet.   I made three of these chairs for the Princeton Theological Seminary.  They already had two, one of  which I borrowed and copied.  Dutch Transition furniture incorporates details from earlier furniture styles as well as newer styles.  The elaborate turnings on the "stretchers" or rungs of the chair are similar to older Dutch designs.  The "pillow" or carved head rest in the top is also found in later period Queen Anne  style furniture.

I also crafted a walnut refectory table for the seminary with a carved skirt.  I copied a table pictured in Wallace Nutting's "Furniture Treasury".  The seminary later commissioned a matching tall side table to serve as a Bible stand.  Click below to see a photo of the Seminary Chapel with the refectory table and chairs in place.   The Bible stand wasn't built until later, so I include a separate photo of the stand.

A fun fact is that my wife and I were married in the chapel before it was renovated, the organ was rebuilt, and my furniture was added.  I don't remember a Transition Dutch Chair, the Chapel had a linoleum floor, the organ didn't shine, and the interior needed painting, not that I was paying that much attention to my surroundings.

Arts and Crafts Inspired Arm Chairs

Mission inspired Chairs

Mission Chairs: The TLB Mission Chairs were designed in conjunction with a whole office full of furniture including a  cantilevered desk,  a Z-shaped standing desk, and a glass-top round conference table.  The ebonized walnut version of this very high-backed chair went in the office.  I have a design a round dinning table to compliment a  set of 4 cherry  TLB chairs that I have in stock.  The table has darkened nicely and now matches the chair color in the picture.  Click the following links to see amateur photos of the office:
