Standing Desk with Drawers
Office Credenza

Slant-top Desk

Slant Top Desk: Pictured in ash with contrasting ebony drawer-pulls this drop front desk is my own contemporary design.  The water-based urethane finish helps reduce the natural yellowing with age.  The desk features three lockable exterior draws.  Four more drawers and multiple pigeon holes hide behind the lockable drop-front.  Further construction details include hand cut half-blind dovetails on the top, three lockable drawers and a lock on the drop front.  I also hand cut all the dovetails on the drawers.

Overall Dimensions: 42”W x 22”D x 38”H

Standing Desk for Mr.Paine

Standing Desk with tilt top, storage and footrest:  It wasn't a standing desk but an Eero Saarinen designed dining side table called the Kingwood Server that inspired this desk.  Mr. Paine brought me a postcard picturing this item and asked to have a his desk made in a similar style.   The pictured desk is cherry with a half-round piece of birdseye maple which keeps pencils from rolling off when the top is tilted. Inside is a good bit of storage and the tilting mechanism. The footrest has a brushed brass scuff plate.  In my original drawing for Mr. Paine I included a drawer in the desk, but the budget didn't allow for it in the final order.  I would be happy to put a drawer or two in the standing desk for you.
As is always the overall dimensions are up to you but the desk pictured has the listed dimensions and is the right height for someone 5'11'' to 6' 3" or so.

More recently I did get to make a version of this standing desk with drawers.  You can see some of the amateur photos I took of it below.

Stand Up desks have become much more popular in the last 15 years.  The idea is not new however;  Thomas Jefferson designed and used a tall desk for reading and drawing (see: http://www.monticello.org/site/research-and-collections/tall-desk).   I use a tall desk and find it much easier on my back.  I have designed several standing or standup desks over the years, most recently a desk based on my Don's Desk; call or email to see the drawings. Here is an example of the most unusual: TLB Standing Desk

 Overall Dimensions: 45"H x 42"W x 33 1/2"D

Saarinen Inspired Standing Desk with drawers

Cylinder Desk

Cylinder Desk: A customer from Hawaii emailed asking if I could build a cherry cylinder desk with ebony drawer pulls.  He sent photographs of two period pieces, one of which was the inspiration for this desk.  Cylinder desks predate the roll-top desk but, as with the roll-top, allow the owner to both store items and lock away work in progress.    I designed this cylinder desk to more contemporary dimensions, allowing for standard file drawers if requested and for accommodation of a contemporary office chair.  Because the cylinder top needs to rotate behind the pigeon holes when opened and the because the pigeon holes themselves take up space, the work surface needs to extend (pull out) when the desk is opened.

The desk breaks down into four sections for transport: two drawer boxes, a back panel, and the top/cylinder/pigeon-hole console.  The curved panels in the 1/4- cylinder top front are comprised of two pieces of bending plywood glued together and veneered over a form using a vacuum press.  The curved pieces of the frame were glued and pressed in a similar manner.   I also include (below) a copy of the "Process" section of the website; the cylinder desk is featured.  Scroll down to read it and get an idea as to how the custom furniture ordering process works.  Overall Dimensions: 65” W x 32”D x 55”H  Price: $37,000.00

Bookcase Credenza

Bookcase Credenza: This office hutch or bookcase credenza was designed to compliment one of my Ming Shaker Partners Desks.  It has the Ming Shaker design details, the over/under quarter-round top over base.   Pictured at 6 feet wide by 7 feet high by 21 inches deep,  it is made of cherry with birdseye maple accents.  I would be happy to duplicate or modify the design to suit your particular needs.

Eventually the law firm where this hutch first lived was restructured.  The new entity decided to standardize all the firm's furniture; unfortunately they didn't choose me to make the new furniture.  I am sure it was only because it would have taken me more than the rest of my life to finish the two hundred plus offices.  Individual lawyers got to take their old, mostly custom furniture home but this lawyer had no use for another hutch.  Therefore  I converted the  hutch in the photo into a separate free standing bookcase made from the top and also got to make a fraternal twin for the base .   The  twins now occupy opposite sides of a fireplace.  One is for general storage and the other, younger twin, acts as a Media Center.  Photos of the new home are included below the photo of the original bookcase hutch.

Ming Shaker Desk

Ming Shaker Desk: A custom desk inspired by Don’s Desk (Ming Shaker Writing Table with Pigeon Hole Console) this has many of the same details.  Constructed of cherry and maple with ebonized walnut pulls, the desk has a file drawer on one side of the base and two smaller drawers on the other side. Overall dimensions are: 60"W x 34"D x 43 1/2"H with the pigeon hole console. The base desk would make an elegant larger desk by itself.  Click below to see other items from the Ming Shaker Line.
